In a memo released by the Federal Ministry of Aviation on Monday, Mrs. Joke Olatunji signed it for the Director of Airport Operations and it was dated June 1, 2023. The memo notified the renaming of the airports.
The airports in Port Harcourt and Nasarawa were renamed in honor of the late nationalist Obafemi Awolowo and the late founder of the Sokoto Caliphate, Usman Dan Fodio, respectively. Maiduguri Airport was renamed after the immediate past, president Muhammadu Buhari

Additionally, the Benin Airport, Ebonyi Airport, and Ibadan Airport all bear the names of deceased individuals: the late Senate President Chuba Okadigbo, the late Premier of the former Western Region, Ladoke Akintola, and the late Oba of Benin, Oba Akenzua II.
The remaining airports include the Akure Airport, named after Olumuyiwa Bernard Aliu. The Benin Airport is notably named after the famous and highly respected Oba Akenzua II. Nigerians were also told that the Dutse Airport now bears the name Muhammad Nuhu Sanusi. Lastly, the information disclosed that Ebonyi Airport should now be called Chuba Wilberforce Okadigbo Airport
Nigerians are still waiting for more changes
Nigerians are still watching the various efforts of the new government. The past decisions on the removal of oil subsidies, the sacking of the Central Bank Governor, the sacking of the service chiefs, the changing of the National Security Adviser, the election of the Senate President are parts of major decisions already made.
Its expected that the next few months will give a clear picture of the direction of the new government after the exit of the government of President Buhari. Critics and associates of the government are all watchibg as the nation grappled with the necessitated removal of oit subsidies

Expectations of Nigerians include:
- Nigerians are waiting for new life-changing developments, payment of ASUU members’ outstanding salaries, increase in workers’ salaries necessitated by the removal of oil subsidies, recovery of stolen national funds, the appointment of ministers and credible heads of government agencies
- Nigerians are most willing to have peace, see the end of insurgencies, and losses of lives
- Nigerians want to live better lives, and its their hope that this present government is ready and willing to facilitate these
- Whether the naming of airports will assist in achieving these is yet to be seen. Though Nigerians have seen that this, so far , is a good intended government
